| We
are delighted that the Regis Classic Tour is supporting
Orchid again for the fifth year in a row. Over
37,400 men will be diagnosed with a male specific
cancer in the next 12 months. Orchid is the only
UK registered cancer charity focusing exclusively
on the three uniquely male cancers and exists
to save men’s lives from prostate, testicular,
and penile cancers by pioneering research and
promoting awareness.
The Facts about Male Cancers
• Testicular cancer is the most common cancer
for men aged 15-45; each year around 2,000 young
men are diagnosed and face the emotional and physical
trauma of fighting this disease.
• Prostate cancer is now the biggest cancer
threat to men in the UK with over 35,000 cases
diagnosed each year; sadly 10,000 men die every
year form this disease – that’s one
every single hour.
• Penile cancer is thankfully very rare
in Europe. It normally affects men over the age
of 60 years. There are about 400 cases in the
UK every year and sadly one in four patients does
not survive.
Behind each statistic is a man; a father, son,
brother, grandfather and friend, and behind each
man there are family and friends who are affected
by these uniquely men’s cancers. By fundraising
for Orchid, you are fighting male cancer.
What Orchid achieves with your Help
In the last 8 years Orchid has invested over £6
million in research. With the help of Orchid,
Professor Tim Oliver has pioneered treatment for
both testicular and prostate cancer that has saved
lives and reduced treatment related side effects.
Orchid has also significantly raised the awareness
of male cancer and in the last year we distributed
over 55,000 information resources including our
award winning DVD. Since 1 January 2009 over 32,000
users have visited the Orchid website and during
Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week in April 2010
we launched our new look website.
Enjoy the Tour – thank you for your support,
and don’t forget to check what’s under
the bonnet regularly!
