THE TWELFTH REGIS CLASSIC TOUR
– 28TH & 29TH March 2009 “46 HEURES
DU SHROPSHIRE”
RAISING FUNDS FOR AGAINST BREAST
CANCER & ORCHID – FIGHTING MALE CANCER.
Quarter Million Target now reached!
Crews from all over the UK entering the 12th
Regis Classic Tour met a warm welcome from Salopians.
The Tour highlighted some of the beautiful places
to explore in this delightful county and hopefully
many participants will be returning in the future
for a more in depth visit.
£224,290.99 was the running total for Cancer
Charities from the proceeds of the first eleven
Regis Classic Tours organised by the ladies of
Bognor Regis Motor Club Ltd and generously sponsored
for the second year by Frosts Cars. After another
very successful event held in Shropshire last
weekend the total for this year already stands
at over £26,000. The ladies of Bognor Regis
Motor Club are thrilled that they have achieved
their target to reach a Quarter of a Million pounds
for Cancer charities this year!
Despite
gloomy predictions of the economy 57 cars started
the event from Albrighton Hall Hotel on Saturday
morning visiting some very interesting venues
around the County over the weekend. These included:
The Long Mynd, a visit around the Wood Brewery
with the chance to purchase some product. The
Land of Lost Content for nostalgia with coffee
and home-made cake at Craven Arms. Car parking
in The Stone House Council car park participants
enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch in The Feathers
at Ludlow. Afternoon cream tea was served at Stokesay
Court with the opportunity to talent spot views
from the movie Atonement on Saturday before returning
to the hotel. On Saturday night at The Hotel everyone
enjoyed a black tie 3 course “Sparkling”
Gala Dinnerwith Tombola, Grand Auction and live
music. The menu included local ham hock and Welsh
lamb. Auction lots included A villa in Cote d’Adur,
hotel breaks at Albrighton & Holland, signed
print, cartoon, photograph and original paintings,
a Model T Ford Pedal Car, autographed catalogues
and an Italian leather grip signed by Sir Stirling
Moss. The auction raised over £4,000. Local
Hereford band “Well Preserved” entertained
after dinner.
On Sunday the crews headed to Loton Hall for
coffee and a visit before a convoy run up the
Loton Park Hillclimb courtesy of Hagley and District
Light Car Club. The route then headed into the
historic and picturesque Ironbridge Gorge to the
finish at RAF Museum at Cosford on Sunday afternoon,
where crews enjoyed a delicious two course lunch.
The participants had the chance to sample plenty
of tasty local Shropshire fayre over the weekend.
This non-competitive very social touring event
is for pre-1980 cars, or interesting cars of later
vintage. The entry included a 1927 Alvis SD 12/50
from Midhurst West Sussex, Alan Harris from Shrewsbury
entered his lovely XK 150 Jaguar. He admitted
that many of the roads used were only a few miles
from his home but he couldn’t remember ever
driving down them before! Other vintage cars included
another early Alvis and Austin 10/4 Clifton Tourer
from Glouceser and Peugeot 201 from Chichester.
There were a great selection of Austin Healey
varients from 100 through to 3000 including a
Frogeye Sprite. A lone Ferrari travelled from
Matlock in Derbyshire and a beautiful Ford Shelby
Mustang with full competition history came from
Bures in Suffolk.
Having won a huge cuddly toy in the Friday evening
raffle Jeff and Fiona Norman hailing from Surrey
were determined that Eeyore would take part in
the tour with him - strapped to the roll cage
of their 1972 Triumph TR6!
This year’s finisher’s gifts include
local produce from the area: Shropshire Lad &
Lass Beer from Wood Brewery, Shropshire Honey
from John King at Church Stretton, Shrewsbury
Biscuits and Gingerbread from T O Williams of
Wem and Two Shropshire flavours of crisps from
Tyrell’s Potato Chips. Morris Lubricants
of Shrewsbury kindly donated their famous Golden
Film Classic Oil for the tombola - helping to
boost the funds still further.
The event started over 12 years ago, when two
lady members of Bognor Regis Motor Club decided
to prove that they could organise car events as
well as their menfolk. They recreated an event
run originally by the Club in the 1950’s
with the first event 12 years ago visiting “Regis”
towns and villages in Southern England. 36 cars
started the first event and raised just over £8,000.
From year two the fundraising totals were into
double figures and for the past six years over
£20,000 has been raised annually with a
bumper £30,000 in 2008.
